Credit and Debit Card Payments

Since January 2018, HMRC no longer accepts personal credit card payments due to the ban on credit card surcharges for individual credit cards. Nevertheless, HMRC still allows payments through corporate credit and debit cards, albeit with a fee.

On the other hand, payment via personal debit cards remains fee-free. In addition, HMRC also accepts Direct Debit, bank transfer, and cheque payments at no additional cost.

Tax Types You Can Pay Online

You can make an online payment to HMRC using an appropriate credit or debit card for various tax types, including:

• Self-Assessment
• Employers’ PAYE and National Insurance
• VAT
• Corporation Tax
• Stamp Duty Land Tax
• Income Tax (for underpaid amounts)
• Imported goods declared on the Customs Declaration Service
• Miscellaneous payments (with payment references starting with ‘X’)

Self-Assessment Payment Reference

When paying for Self-Assessment, ensure you provide your 11-character payment reference, comprising your 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) followed by the letter ‘K’.

Payment Processing Time

HMRC processes your online debit or credit card payments on the date you make them, including those made during bank holidays and weekends.
